Growing Together Day at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area with Parks California and Muralist Joe Colmenares

WHAT:

On May 14, we are celebrating the community at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area. Led by local muralist Joe Colmenares, Parks California, California State Parks, and the California State Coastal Conservancy, we are transforming Candlestick Point’s main entrance into a more welcoming environment for the community of Bayview Hunters Point and beyond.

Colmenares will lead the painting of the park entry kiosk alongside members of the community. Opportunities include learning about Candlestick’s history and participating local organizations will be hosting interactive activities.

Live music, performances by Hip Hop For Change Inc. & DJ Casanova, food trucks and more! Join us for a day of fun at the park!

QUOTES:

Joe Colmenares (Muralist): “I’m a product of the Bayview, and as bad as it can be, we want to keep the positivity and transform it into what we’d like to see. I think that’s our duty and our mission—to change how folks view the Bayview and Candlestick and nature and this particular park. Because these are beautiful places where beautiful people live, people who want to and continue to give back.”

Armando Quintero (California State Parks Director): “I believe that Growing Together Day is going to be part of a new beginning for this chapter in Candlestick Point SRA’s storied history. With an increased focus on local partnerships, this event with Joe Colmenares Art will not only be a chance to reinvigorate our park entrance but will also be a sign to our visitors and the Bayview Hunters Point community at large that Candlestick Point SRA is open and ready to welcome our neighbors with open arms.”
