Students Explore California State Parks with passPORTS: A Blended Learning Adventure

At Parks California, we believe every student deserves the chance to experience the wonders of California’s incredible state parks. That’s why we’re proud to support passPORTS, a program that combines digital and in-park experiences to provide a deeper, more immersive learning adventure for students.

How Does it Work?

passPORTS offers an innovative blended-access approach that seamlessly merges live virtual connections to state parks with in-person field trips. Students can explore parks virtually before stepping into them, setting the stage for deeper learning and engagement. With additional tools like videos, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) each park visit becomes an unforgettable experience that resonates beyond the classroom.

Through our partnership with Computer Using Educators (CUE), teachers are empowered with a wealth of classroom lesson plans and post-program resources aligned with California State K-12 curriculum. These tools help enrich field trips and ensure that learning continues long after students leave the parks.

Since its launch as one of Parks California’s first programs, passPORTS has grown tremendously. Beginning as a pilot in 2020 in partnership with California State Parks passPORTS connected students with five state parks, which expanded to ten in its second year. Today, the program operates in 55 state parks across California, providing students with invaluable educational experiences rooted in the natural and cultural landscapes of the state.

Since 2022, passPORTS has helped over 10,000 students experience the beauty of California’s state parks. The program is committed to making these opportunities accessible to all, which is why Title I public schools can apply for up to $1,000 in grants to help cover field trip-related expenses. The grant covers essential costs like transportation, substitute teachers, program fees, and supplies, helping schools create meaningful outdoor learning experiences without financial strain.

Whether it’s learning about the natural and cultural heritage at Humboldt Redwoods State Park or the rich history of Old Town San Diego Historic State Park, we invite you to explore passPORTS for a unique opportunity to connect with nature, culture, and history—virtually and in person.  Feeling inspired to bring these experiences to your classroom?
